In Sweden you will have access to upper management, regardless of your new position. No need to be practicing your elevator speech because you will work closely with the boss here in Sweden. Not only will you be on a first name basis with all your co-workers including the CEO, but you will be invited to contribute and allowed to attend meetings with top management present.

The flat organizational structure can be more demanding as you will be expected to assume responsibility for your own development. There is very little micromanaging and less reporting than in many other countries. You will have your opportunity to shine.

The Meeting Culture

A common mistake is to think that everyone is on board with a project and start working on it. The meeting culture takes time for many expats to adjust to. Many meetings will take place before a decision is made. That's why it can be wise to ask for permission to move forward with an assignment - even when you think it is clear that you are all in agreement.

Take Advantage of Your Access to Information

Information flows freely, and it's rare that only part of an organization would be privy to certain information. Swedes believe that the more knowledgeable a person is, the more he or she can contribute to the company’s success.

Each team member is welcome to contribute thoughts to a project. Suggestions for improvements are warmly received. Ideas outrank seniority, and there is little prestige with a title. Just remember not to brag about your contribution, that won't be viewed well by your Swedish co-workers. A more understated approach is valued in Sweden.

Take Advantage of Your Access to Management

There are few layers in the organization, and you will work closely with your boss. While there is less reporting, keeping your manager up to date on your work is much appreciated. If you have the habit of sending a weekly or monthly milestone report, it will be appreciated. Even better, it may actually eliminate the need for yet another meeting!

It is common practice to take your questions/comments directly to your manager, creating a shorter chain of command. It does not matter whether you are addressing your boss, doctor or teacher, everyone is on a first-name basis. Addressing someone with “Mr.” or “Mrs.” is considered old fashioned and is not something you should do in Sweden.

Enjoy Your Managerial Position With Self Starters On Your Team

If you are the manager, you will experience some demands you may not be accustomed to. Your staff will expect you to inform them on a regular basis. They will not appreciate micromanagement, and they will expect you to listen to their input. You will most often be able to trust that the work will progress as planned.

Consensus In Decision Making

Swedes are non-confrontational and some decisions are made based on compromise rather than the best course of action. This is considered as pragmatic and moving forward without stepping on too many toes. Swedes value compromise and finding common ground. If you listen during meetings and can find a way to always move forward without causing friction you will succeed.
